Jim Ewing

I discovered my passion for art in my early teens, but it’s only in recent years that I’ve pursued painting professionally. My path into the art world began with photography and filmmaking, mediums that taught me how to find meaning in small details and recognize the emotional power of visual storytelling. My practice is driven by a desire to capture the human condition through abstract, emotionally charged forms.

My work is shaped by quiet traumas, the kind that linger beneath the skin and echo through memory. I paint abstract, organic forms that suggest flesh, movement, and psychological weight. These shapes aren’t literal bodies, but reflections of how pain, healing, and memory live inside us. Each piece holds a fragment of something unresolved, stretched between what is seen and what’s felt. I aim to create spaces where stillness and discomfort exist together. Where something fragile can also feel strong. My paintings aren’t about reliving pain, but about giving it form, and maybe, a little peace.

Professional Background

Before focusing on painting, I worked professionally in photography and filmmaking for over a decade. I began my journey at 15 with street photography and went on to shoot music artists such as Kendrick Lamar, SZA, Post Malone, and others. I later worked in Los Angeles in multiple roles across the film industry, eventually specializing in cinematography and film editing. My work has contributed to projects for companies such as DreamWorks, Paramount Pictures, MTV, and BET. I’ve been involved in feature films, TV shows, and documentaries, experiences that continue to inform my visual language and sensitivity as a painter.
